THE PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN PSYCHOLOGY
Design Psychology is a fairly new discipline in the design field that emphasizes the importance of being intentional in design. Design Vision Studio creates environments that represent more than “decorated” rooms. We enhance the chemistry between design and architecture. Our specialty is beautiful, functional and creative spaces that feel good to be in them.
This commissioned art piece captures a treasured wedding day moment of our clients. Using the principles of Design Psychology, our vision was to create a connection to their surroundings and be a conversation piece in their home. Our clients took a leap of faith and are thrilled with their one-of-a-kind painting.
Selecting art for clients is so personal – we often feel that we might as well be shopping for a bathing suit for them. In this case, we had an idea to create a commissioned piece of art depicting a treasured memory.
We asked our clients to select a photo that told a story about them. Maybe a favorite vacation, travel destination, or scenery. They searched their photos and kept coming back to one taken on their wedding day by a guest.
We pitched our idea and presented conceptual renderings. Even so, the thought of an oversize painting of themselves in their living room scared them. We promised that they wouldn’t come off as showy or vain (more fear of theirs) because their faces would not be featured. Although the clients were initially skeptical, once they saw what we had in mind they were “all in.”
We found Berndt Heidemann @bhartwork who was the perfect artist for this project. He specializes in a form of abstract photo-realism. We worked with him throughout the process, selecting the precise color palette to be harmonious with the new room design.
The end result is a beautiful, sophisticated and distinct piece of art, which has been the centerpiece of conversation amongst their friends and family. Our clients were happily pleased with their custom artwork.
In 2017, I committed to #365DaysOfDesignDVS, where I posted a new photo of one of our design projects every single day. For those of you who followed along, thank you for doing so.
By the way – I will never be so foolish to accept such a challenge again!
As 2018 begins, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to you for your valued loyalty and patronage. It is only with the support and trust of wonderful clients like you, that Design Vision Studio can continue our passion of Making Every Home Feel Like A Rock Star!
At DVS, we love improving our client’s lives by creating beautiful spaces that reflect their lifestyles and tastes. We strive to make your design and remodel experience inspiring, enjoyable, and affordable.
We look forward to seeing you in 2018 – what room is next?
I, along with Kym Carillo and Sarah Rochford wish you and your family a wonderful New Year!
Thank you, Patricia Lockwood

Well, I see we’ve got your attention!
OK, we didn’t actually make it into a bar
but we did have tons of fun while in Canada
Design Vision Studio had the honor of designing our lovely clients new home just outside of Toronto.
Last month we had the privilege of experiencing a “reverse reveal” since most of our design was installed while we were back in Southern California. This was our first chance to see the final results for ourselves.
The home is absolutely breath-taking and our reward is how much our clients (along with their family & friends) LOVE it. Oh Canada!
We are so humbled and grateful for this opportunity to design a dream project while sharing adventures in beautiful Toronto and celebrating new friendships.
The “after” photos will be coming soon. In the meantime, we will share just one small peek at this project. This is the “you won’t believe this is a mudroom” mudroom. And it is our featured Rock Star Room of the Month for July.
HAPPY 150th ANNIVERSARY TO CANADA
& HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY TO THE GOOD OL’ USA
This is definitely not your typical mudroom
and it’s hard to believe this room is a garage entryway.
The room boasts extra storage, a hidden recycle bin,
a place to drop your keys, a place to kick off your shoes
and – of course – purse parking!
Don’t be afraid – use wallpaper even in unlikely spaces.
What a way to dress up a room!

1st Runner Up
A COLLECTED HOME in Palm Desert, CA
This large guest bedroom suite showcases the not so subtle differences between clutter and collection. After sitting in boxes for years, a lifetime of sports memorabilia are utilized to give this wonderful room a story to tell.
WINNING ISN’T EVERYTHING…
but WOW – it’s something!
The competition was fierce again this year and we are honored to be recognized amongst this amazing group of talented designers. And a special thank you goes to Jenny Cano, the Executive Director of IDS for a truly inspiring and wonderful conference this year.
ANOTHER REASON WE ARE PROUD MEMBERS OF IDS
This year marks the first combined conference of ART + IDS. This premier event brought together hundreds of home décor professionals, including manufacturers, importers, retailers, sales reps, product designers and interior designers. The conference provided unique networking opportunities where we were able to connect and collaborate while expanding our knowledge, learning the latest advances and best practices in our industry.
The highlight of our experience during this design conference was participating in the community project at Grand Veterans Village in Phoenix, Arizona.
In just 4 short hours, our conference attendees spent the afternoon decorating over 100 rooms, offices and the community center common space for homeless, low-income, and disabled veterans.
It was a privilege serving our veterans and it would not have been possible without our amazing volunteer crew and generous donors!
ARTFUL LIVING – INSIDE & OUT
Design Vision Studio often collaborates with landscape designers and contractors to create optimal outdoor living opportunities. Team DVS encourages use of the entire property, not just the house, during our design and remodeling projects.
We feel that outdoor spaces should not be overlooked as a place for artistic expression. It is the perfect opportunity to create outdoor “rooms” that our clients will enjoy for years to come.
Using the same design principles we would for the interior, we incorporate art, furnishings and lighting to form a harmonious connection to the inside of the home.
7′ kinetic sculpture installed on travertine base centers the focal point for this beautiful courtyard. The entry features a live-edge wood and metal bench discovered in a gallery during a visit with our clients in the San Juan Islands last summer. The unique entry gate was designed to compliment the curves and movement in the metal sculpture. This courtyard is dramatically enhanced by the artful lighting.
We’ve all heard the term “curb appeal.”
The approach to your front door is where first impressions are made.
Art doesn’t only belong inside of your home. Take it outside!
Be careful, the best choices for outdoor wall decor probably
doesn’t come from a store that accepts coupons.
Can you believe this before photo?
We think Team DVS “CRUSHED” this Courtyard!
BOXING GLOVES OPTIONAL
If your problem is design disagreements, the SOLUTION is Design Vision Studio.
We are EXPERTS at settling design disputes between spouses. Why? Because truthfully, even our design team doesn’t always agree! There are several different approaches and opinions in every design project, but we believe these different ideas and points of view can come together to EQUAL SUCCESS.
As Design Psychology Coaches, we focus on our client’s needs and preferences. We understand our client’s vision and then apply all of our design experience to it. COLLABORATION, not confrontation, is what results in a succesful finished product.
Design Vision Studio will fight for you, but in the end the HOUSE WILL BE THE WINNER.
Kym and Patricia won’t knock each others blocks off – but we promise you the project will end up a TOTAL KNOCK OUT!
Team DVS is getting “real” and sometimes it doesn’t start so pretty…. Every single day in March, we will be sharing our latest dream project with before photos, our inspiration, vision boards & the big reveal.

Less Mouse… More House
In January, Team DVS took a design field trip to attend the Las Vegas Market; the most comprehensive collection of furniture and home decor in the Western United States. We call this trade show “Disneyland for Designers” because it is overwhelming, exhausting and exhilarating all at the same time. Las Vegas Market may not be the happiest place on earth for everyone, but for designers, it has it all… minus the tourists, kids and lines.
We joined thousands of designers as we explored 5 million square feet of showrooms with the latest in furniture, fabrics, lighting, art, accessories, and rugs. Team DVS also attended seminars to gather CEU’s (Continued Education Units) which are required for our Design Psychology Certifications and our IDS (Interior Design Society) memberships.
Beyond the opportunity to see WHAT’S NEW and WHAT’S HOT, we attend this exclusive trade event because Design Vision Studio is dedicated to staying current and relevant as Interior Design Professionals. With close to 4,000 brands and manufacturing lines showcased, we had the opportunity to see a variety of new merchandise and we are so excited to bring back our knowledge and finds for our clients.

Interior Design is like dressing for a party or a job interview: where you dress your best – to feel your best!
Design Vision Studio offers so much more than just living in “decorated” rooms. Our focus is to create spaces that are not only beautiful and functional, but also where you feel like you’re living at the top-of-your-game (you know, like a rock star.) This type of design is not a LOOK – it’s a FEELING.
Being proud of your home when it reflects your best will allow you to live authentically and shine above the rest.
Live better. Feel special. Get Started. Let’s Rock & Roll…
Team DVS was tasked with creating a dining room
to seat 18 for this Vacation Rental Property.
We chose to layer textures, shapes and go bold with striking cow print chairs.
The design is harmonious with the home and architecture,
because after all, it is a ranch property located on several acres.
To streamline and limit the clutter of furniture legs in a dining room,
consider pedestal dining tables and a mix of benches with dining chairs.
