Incorporating Design Psychology into your home

THE PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN PSYCHOLOGY

Design Psychology is a fairly new discipline in the design field that emphasizes the importance of being intentional in design. Design Vision Studio creates environments that represent more than “decorated” rooms. We enhance the chemistry between design and architecture. Our specialty is beautiful, functional and creative spaces that feel good to be in them.

This commissioned art piece captures a treasured wedding day moment of our clients. Using the principles of Design Psychology, our vision was to create a connection to their surroundings and be a conversation piece in their home. Our clients took a leap of faith and are thrilled with their one-of-a-kind painting.

10. High Resolution DOTY #387

Selecting art for clients is so personal – we often feel that we might as well be shopping for a bathing suit for them. In this case, we had an idea to create a commissioned piece of art depicting a treasured memory.

3. DOTY #387 - favorite wedding photoWe asked our clients to select a photo that told a story about them. Maybe a favorite vacation, travel destination, or scenery. They searched their photos and kept coming back to one taken on their wedding day by a guest.

Version 2

We pitched our idea and presented conceptual renderings. Even so, the thought of an oversize painting of themselves in their living room scared them. We promised that they wouldn’t come off as showy or vain (more fear of theirs) because their faces would not be featured. Although the clients were initially skeptical, once they saw what we had in mind they were “all in.”

8. DOTY #387 Artist at review meeting

We found Berndt Heidemann @bhartwork who was the perfect artist for this project. He specializes in a form of abstract photo-realism.  We worked with him throughout the process, selecting the precise color palette to be harmonious with the new room design.

1. DOTY #387 Original Designs - After

The end result is a beautiful, sophisticated and distinct piece of art, which has been the centerpiece of conversation amongst their friends and family. Our clients were happily pleased with their custom artwork.

Thank You for the Referral
Against the advice of “marketing experts”
we are saying goodbye to our monthly newsletter

We are shaking things up over here at Design Vision Studio and it’s time for some fun and exciting changes. Thank you to all our loyal followers who have read my design rants & raves over the last 8 years. If you have enjoyed our design newsletter, now is the time to take it a step further and FOLLOW US.

BLOG or INSTAGRAM, FACEBOOK and PINTEREST

You will be kept in the loop and continue to enjoy our interior design theme posts. And you certainly don’t want to miss our next 50 days on social media. We will be sharing our recently completed interior design project in Toronto.

MHS Class of 79

I’ll be finishing out the year with my 365 Days of Design Challenge to post a new photo featuring projects by Team DVS each day of the year. My new mantra is “if there’s a will, there’s a way.” (Seriously, what was I thinking?!?!)

Little Things

Another big change that I’m excited to announce is Kym has accepted a new promotion and is now my Design Partner. We all know she has been in this role for a long time but now it’s official.

Our focus will be on Quality Not Quantity allowing us more time to explore opportunities and focus on the types of projects that feed our creative souls.

Rest assured that Kym, Sarah and I will continue working together as a Team to design your Residential, Commercial & Hospitality projects.

So here’s to our future, let us all celebrate New Beginnings for Design Vision Studio.

HAPPY SUMMER EVERYONE!

Two Americans walk into a Canadian Bar…

Well, I see we’ve got your attention!
OK, we didn’t actually make it into a bar
but we did have tons of fun while in Canada
The Intrepid Adventurer

Design Vision Studio had the honor of designing our lovely clients new home just outside of Toronto.

Last month we had the privilege of experiencing a “reverse reveal” since most of our design was installed while we were back in Southern California.  This was our first chance to see the final results for ourselves.

The home is absolutely breath-taking and our reward is how much our clients (along with their family & friends) LOVE it.  Oh Canada!

We are so humbled and grateful for this opportunity to design a dream project while sharing adventures in beautiful Toronto and celebrating new friendships.

The “after” photos will be coming soon. In the meantime, we will share just one small peek at this project.  This is the “you won’t believe this is a mudroom” mudroom.  And it is our featured Rock Star Room of the Month for July.

HAPPY 150th ANNIVERSARY TO CANADA

& HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY TO THE GOOD OL’ USA

ROCK STAR OF THE MONTH-4

why-it-works

This is definitely not your typical mudroom
and it’s hard to believe this room is a garage entryway.
The room boasts extra storage, a hidden recycle bin,
a place to drop your keys, a place to kick off your shoes
and – of course – purse parking!

DESIGN TIP:
Don’t be afraid – use wallpaper even in unlikely spaces.
What a way to dress up a room!

WINNING ISN’T EVERYTHING…
but WOW – it’s something!

The competition was fierce again this year and we are honored to be recognized amongst this amazing group of talented designers. And a special thank you goes to Jenny Cano, the Executive Director of IDS for a truly inspiring and wonderful conference this year.

ANOTHER REASON WE ARE PROUD MEMBERS OF IDS

This year marks the first combined conference of ART + IDS. This premier event brought together hundreds of home décor professionals, including manufacturers, importers, retailers, sales reps, product designers and interior designers. The conference provided unique networking opportunities where we were able to connect and collaborate while expanding our knowledge, learning the latest advances and best practices in our industry.

The highlight of our experience during this design conference was participating in the community project at Grand Veterans Village in Phoenix, Arizona.

Untitled design

In just 4 short hours, our conference attendees spent the afternoon decorating over 100 rooms, offices and the community center common space for homeless, low-income, and disabled veterans.

It was a privilege serving our veterans and it would not have been possible without our amazing volunteer crew and generous donors!

Thank you!

Who really NEEDS an Interior Designer?

42-5 copy 2

FICTION:

Interior Designers are too expensive and no longer needed. Why pay for a luxury service when interior design is made to look so easy on the Internet and HGTV. Almost anyone can do it, right? You can do it yourself and get the same results while saving more than a few buckeroos.

FACT:

A successful design project requires more than a certain eye and flair for design to be able to pull a room together to be fabulous and functional. It requires talent, confidence, experience and proficiency to juggle both time and tasks. Interior Designers provide a valuable lifestyle service for clients who believe in investing both their money and time wisely.

june 29, 2016-2

YOU DON’T NEED AN INTERIOR DESIGNER IF YOU…..

1.  Are CLAIRVOYANT and see the possibilities that pertain to your space – beyond copying an “inspiration” photo found on the web

2.  Are DECISIVE while combing through thousands of choices with the ability to make the correct selections in color, size, balance, scale, durability, and overall aesthetics

3.  Are extremely ORGANIZED with the ability to clearly identify the needs and goals of the project with a vision of how it will look and function

4.  Can FOCUS on the big picture while still considering the small details

5.  Have years of EXPERIENCE with the nuances of color, lighting, plumbing, finishes, textiles, hard surfaces, custom cabinetry, space planning and reading architectural drawings

6.  Can AFFORD to make costly mistakes with wrong purchases or by letting retailers and contractors make your design decisions for you

7.  Don’t mind the RESULTS from making only “safe” decisions without a professional cheerleader to encourage braver and more impactful design selections

8.  Can DEDICATE countless hours facilitating the tasks as a professional shopper, researcher, secretary, accountant, scheduler, project manager, purchasing supervisor, order tracker, stylist, delivery receiver, customer service agent, installer, and babysitter

9.  Have an elite TEAM of reputable tradespeople and other resources at your fingertips

10.  Don’t mind paying retail when really, you could have covered most of the fees of a professional design team with the trade DISCOUNTS we pass along

Everyone tells us…..“Interior Design must be such a fun job.”
Well yes, most of the time it is. But what most people don’t realize is how time consuming, difficult and demanding the tasks of an interior designer can be – even for seasoned veterans like Kym and Patricia. Perhaps we make it look easy by keeping the struggles under wraps. We believe that design is in our DNA – so maybe we have an advantage here.
If more than three of the above examples are not an accurate description of your skill set, perhaps you need an Interior Designer after all!

It’s not a secret… we are willing and ready to help.

With over 70+ Client Testimonials – you could be our next happy design client.

Taking ART out of the MUSEUM

unspecified

ARTFUL LIVING – INSIDE & OUT

Design Vision Studio often collaborates with landscape designers and contractors to create optimal outdoor living opportunities. Team DVS encourages use of the entire property, not just the house, during our design and remodeling projects.

We feel that outdoor spaces should not be overlooked as a place for artistic expression. It is the perfect opportunity to create outdoor “rooms” that our clients will enjoy for years to come.

Using the same design principles we would for the interior, we incorporate art, furnishings and lighting to form a harmonious connection to the inside of the home.

ROCK STAR OF THE MONTH

7′ kinetic sculpture installed on travertine base centers the focal point for this beautiful courtyard. The entry features a live-edge wood and metal bench discovered in a gallery during a visit with our clients in the San Juan Islands last summer. The unique entry gate was designed to compliment the curves and movement in the metal sculpture. This courtyard is dramatically enhanced by the artful lighting.

DESIGN TIP:
We’ve all heard the term “curb appeal.”
The approach to your front door is where first impressions are made.
Art doesn’t only belong inside of your home. Take it outside!
Be careful, the best choices for outdoor wall decor probably
doesn’t come from a store that accepts coupons.

Can you believe this before photo?
We think Team DVS “CRUSHED” this Courtyard!

SAUVIE ISLAND, PORTLAND
What designer could pass on the opportunity to buy a floating home like the one featured in the movie Sleepless in Seattle? Well, not this one! When I purchased this floating home from my aunt and uncle, I didn’t know about floats and stringers and other issues specific to floating homes. Nor had I really thought about the hassle of an out of state remodel. Believing that I was up for the challenge, I grabbed my water wings, sketchpad, and measuring tape and jumped right in!

Some of my friends and family weren’t quite sure what I saw in this place. As my Aunt and Uncle aged, the place was a bit neglected and needed a lot of TLC. Also, having been built in 1965, it had an outdated floor plan that I knew needed a major overhaul. But I saw huge potential in this A-Frame dwelling and envisioned the home as a family retreat for relaxing getaways. For years when I visited my Aunt and Uncle I would walk through the home and dream about all the things I would do if I owned it – and now I did! The end result was a beautiful home that had significantly increased in value – leading to a surprise “flip” a year and a half later!

If you’ve ever thought of buying a floating home, I’ve already tripped over some of the hurdles you will face. So hop on board – hopefully you will enjoy the ride.

I have shared my story of this floating home remodel and accidental flip in my eBook “Sleepless in Portland.” Just subscribe to our monthly design newsletter and you will be sent a link to view all the photos and stories in my eBook.

Thank you all for your business & support!

We are EXPERTS at settling design disputes between spouses. Why? Because truthfully, even our design team doesn’t always agree! There are several different approaches and opinions in every design project, but we believe these different ideas and points of view can come together to EQUAL SUCCESS.

As Design Psychology Coaches, we focus on our client’s needs and preferences. We understand our client’s vision and then apply all of our design experience to it. COLLABORATION, not confrontation, is what results in a succesful finished product.

CAN THERE BE A DISNEYLAND WITHOUT MICKEY?

IMG_9182

Less Mouse… More House

In January, Team DVS took a design field trip to attend the Las Vegas Market; the most comprehensive collection of furniture and home decor in the Western United States. We call this trade show “Disneyland for Designers” because it is overwhelming, exhausting and exhilarating all at the same time. Las Vegas Market may not be the happiest place on earth for everyone, but for designers, it has it all… minus the tourists, kids and lines.

We joined thousands of designers as we explored 5 million square feet of showrooms with the latest in furniture, fabrics, lighting, art, accessories, and rugs. Team DVS also attended seminars to gather CEU’s (Continued Education Units) which are required for our Design Psychology Certifications and our IDS (Interior Design Society) memberships.

Beyond the opportunity to see WHAT’S NEW and WHAT’S HOT, we attend this exclusive trade event because Design Vision Studio is dedicated to staying current and relevant as Interior Design Professionals. With close to 4,000 brands and manufacturing lines showcased, we had the opportunity to see a variety of new merchandise and we are so excited to bring back our knowledge and finds for our clients.
