The million-dollar design question…

Nestled into a private cove on Shaw Island in the San Juan Islands, our clients acquired a funky, vintage lodge filled with crazy collections, stories and possibly even ghostly spirits.

Kym and I were recently invited up to spend a weekend there to discuss a possible design and remodeling plan for this property. We later found out our clients were a little hesitant and unsure how their interior designers were going to react to their eccentric home where every single possible design rule has been thrown out the window.

The main collections are authentic totems and Native American art, all things maritime with an emphasis towards luxury cruise liners, and then a wing filled with treasures from the Orient.

Our clients say the theme is “understated is overrated” and, in this case, we couldn’t agree more!

As certified Design Psychology coaches, we encourage people to create and live authentically in their homes by surrounding themselves with their favorite things and memories.

But what happens when those “favorite” things don’t go together? What happens if you want to thin out your collection a bit? What do you keep, what do you let go of? Or, what happens when repairs and TLC are needed but replacements are no longer available?

We can help answer the million-dollar question…
is it time to CHERISH or is it time to CHANGE?

Our clients tell us they don’t feel like homeowners as much as they feel like curators of a vast collection. This home and nearly all of the contents were lovingly passed on to our clients. It serves as a legacy to the amazing couple that spent nearly 40 years hunting and gathering the amazing collections that adorn this home.

You can’t help but thinking this island home is the “life of the party.” Dressed outrageously with midcentury modern furniture, several sets of fine china and over 30 country and 12 state flags to greet visitors on their private dock. The home also boasts a vast collection of fine scotch that looks like it should be on the set of Mad Men.

Somehow, it not only works but it FEELS GOOD to be there.

This is the “Auntie Mame” of properties and needs to be CHERISHED. We all agree that the restoration and remodel of this home needs to be done without disturbing the amazing character of this property.

More than a Name Change…

I promise, this is the LAST BLOG for Lockwood Interiors

After 5 years of blogging and sending monthly email newsletters
for Lockwood Interiors… I promise, this will be the last.

I know. I can’t believe it either. But it’s time to take a final encore. Ok, so perhaps I am being a bit dramatic, because really, Team Lockwood isn’t going anywhere. We are in the final stretch before our launch of DESIGN VISION STUDIO.

More than a name change, this is about staying current and at the top of our field. Quite frankly, we have simply outgrown Lockwood Interiors.

When I started Lockwood Interiors, it was only me-me-me. But now I have an incredible and talented DESIGN TEAM! I am so proud of Kym Carilo and Sarah Rochford for continuing their design education. They have made it possible to become a different and better type of “ONLY.”

Design Vision Studio will be the ONLY award-winning luxury design firm in the western states comprised of a team of professional interior designers who are ALSO uniquely qualified specialists certified in Design Psychology.

So stay tuned… Next month, we will roll out the carpet for a brand new blog featuring our behind-the-scenes Design Vision Stories. We will debut our new website with loads of new project photos. We will be launching a variety of new design services with big plans to improve how we serve our clients!

This is NOT goodbye and we promise we won’t forget you. You will continue to receive our new and improved newsletter from Design Vision Studio. And best yet, we will NOT be changing our VERY POPULAR email policy.

“Marketing experts say we should send more emails.
We disagree and think ONCE-A-MONTH is enough!

Thank you for all of your business and support.

The Trials & Tribulations
of an out-of-state remodel

Sleepless in Portland:
a designers experience of remodeling a floating home

Portland Houseboat June 2014

I took my Dad for a whirlwind trip to my Portland houseboat for Fathers Day. We explored Sauvie Island, got rained on (despite weather reports declaring a dry time), and spent a wonderful afternoon at Powell’s Books.

After meeting with contractors and electricians, the project is inching along. My original plan was to spend several weeks living in this houseboat in July. As you can see by the photos, that was clearly an optimistic goal. If only I could clone myself to be on-site to handle the endless questions and decisions to get this project moving forward at a faster pace.

After adjusting the target project completion date to September, this month will be busy struggling to stay on top of the progress from my home in the desert. The electrical is done, the kitchen and flooring have been ordered, and a fresh coat of paint will be applied soon. So although the progress photos still look a bit scary, this houseboat might actually be habitable soon.

This experience is a good reminder of how clients feel during their out-of-state remodeling projects. I have a new and better appreciation for what they go through, because I too feel anxious. I find myself thinking – this designer needs a designer!
